Risco Caido and the Sacred Mountains in Gran Canaria: do you want to learn more?

From 07/07/2019, Risco Caido and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria cultural landscape belongs to UNESCO World Heritage. We want to show you this amazing area so you will understand the history and culture from the ancient Canarians.

One of the best hidden secrets in the island: the Sacred Mountains and the cultural landscape; are located at the North West side, an almost inaccessible area that has remained untouched for centuries. This is the area where you can really understand what the traditional lifestyle of the first inhabitants of Gran Canaria has been, and how we still preserve part of this enormous cultural and natural wealth. Likewise, this entire area has been considered a Biosphere Reserve since 2005.

You will spend an unforgettable day in which you will learn in detail the impressive history of the first settlers of Gran Canaria; discover some amazing archaeological sites; and see in situ their way of life. You will taste the most typical local products; including gofio, an aboriginal food that still survives in our gastronomic culture.

Unesco Gran Canaria: The route

Volcanic landscapes

We will pick you up at your hotel entrance (located in Maspalomas or Mogan) from 8.45 to 9.15 -we will let you know the exact pickup time the day before- with “Lupita”: our new climatized minivan ready for a maximum of 6 passengers.

Heading to Mogan Village, we are going to take an amazing road to the center of the island and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria cultural landscape.

Along the route, we will stop at different viewpoints, so we can contemplate the landscape, learn about nature in Gran Canaria. We will stop at one of the biggest lakes on the island – the Presa de las Niñas – where you will learn some surprising legends about the area.

Artenara

Artenara, a small town built in caves (more than 600 cave houses!) in which you can still find cave dwellings. Here we will discover the visitor centre of the Risco Caido, with the real reproduction of this incredible cave and the impressive light effect inside. In addition, we will see different cave locations that make this city unique in Gran Canaria.

After leaving Artenara, we will stop for lunch, with homemade Canarian food, in the heart of the Biosphere Reserve of Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria Mountains

Heading back to the center of the island, we are going to stop in several points to contemplate incredible views of the mountains in Gran Canaria, like Roque Nublo, Roque Bentayga or Tamadaba forest. After this, we will stop in Tunte (San Bartolomé de Tirajana); in this city, we are going to have a coffee break -not included on price- before heading to our last stop:

La fortaleza Gran Canaria

La Fortaleza Gran Canaria; made up of three enormous rocks: the large fortress, the small fortress and the fortress below (or Titana). The ancient Canary Islanders used it as a habitat, burial place, storage place and even a place to worship their gods for more than 1,000 years. It is also the last stronghold of aboriginal resistance against the Spanish conquerors. A magical place “off the beaten track” where you will better understand the bravery and incredible culture and history of the first inhabitants of the island.

Finally, we are going to drive back to the south of Gran Canaria and leave you back at your hotel at about 18.30.

What’s included

  • Transfer from hotels located in Maspalomas and Mogan touristic areas.
  • Lunch
  • Beverages
  • Accident and liability insurances.

We recommend:

  • Sun protection
  • Cameras and mobiles with a full battery
  • There are differences in temperatures up to 15ºC on the different points we are going to visit. A jumper is recommended, just in case. Warm clothes in winter.
  • Comfortable shoes.

More than a tour Ines and Juanjo were brilliant at teaching the geography, geology, history and culture of Gran Canaria via all the senses. The morning was a fun adventure with the rest of the "family" exploring some beautiful and unusual sights. This was was more than a tour, it was entertainment.

Mountains, caves and history.... I recommend it to everyone! We were at the time of the kalima winds. But would love to be there again during clear visibility. Great views! Lupita, Juanjo and Inés thank you very much for the time together!

Great photos I recommend getting there as early as possible before the Instagrammers arrive for endless pictures of the same rock. Very unusual and pretty, canyon is probably only 50-100yds long but it's worth the visit, especially if combined with going to Cuevas de la Audiencia which are nearby.

Views from the highest points of Gran Canaria I wholeheartedly echo the sentiments expressed in the numerous 5-star reviews for Sky Rebels' tours led by Juanjo and Inés (and Lupita). While these day trips may come at a slightly higher cost compared to others on Gran Canaria, the immersive and captivating experiences they offer are worth every cent. As a solo traveler, I joined both the Roque Nublo and Unesco Sacred Mountains tours, and my satisfaction was beyond measure. The small and intimate group setting, coupled with Inés' delectable homemade tapas-style lunch, added an extra layer of delight to the journey. From breathtaking vistas to the couple's profound knowledge of the island and its indigenous people, the Canarios, which they generously shared throughout the tours, every element was meticulously curated. The pacing was also 'Just Right,' leaving me with a sole 'complaint'—the missed opportunity to partake in more tours. Without a doubt, I will be returning for additional adventures with Sky Rebels in the future.

Great tour for culture interested individualist Juanjo and Ines are a great couple: - intelligent - carying - having a profound knowledge of her country - are phantastic organizer - show you great things, „hidden gems“, away from the tourist mass - honest - full of fantasy - good driver - provide a lovely home made lunch for you I felt in love with the tour and can not wate to make the next one with the sky rebels ( maybe a bit a missleeding title of the“ 2 man company“…)

FAQ about Unesco Gran Canaria tour:

What does our Unesco Gran Canaria tour consist of?

This is a private excursion, maximum 6 passengers, to discover the World heritage sites in the island of Gran Canaria; both the most emblematic places and other hidden but spectacular places for us.

The guided tour will take place in a new vehicle with all kinds of comforts.

How far will we walk?

Throughout the guided tour, we will make stops to get to know different parts of the island of Gran Canaria. Of course, the total amount of walking distance is entirely up to you. On this private excursion in Gran Canaria, we will provide you with walking poles and water in case that you require it. All included in the price.

How far will we travel?

The total distance in our minivan is about 190 km. Starting in the south of Gran Canaria, we will head towards the NW of the island; later SE, and finish in Maspalomas. Our minivan, “Lupita”, has all the comforts, such as individual air conditioning and USB ports for charging electronic devices. Above all, we want your experience with our private excursions in Gran Canaria to be as enjoyable as possible.

How long is this Unesco Gran Canaria tour?

The total duration of the guided tour is approximately 9 hours. Starting at 9 a.m. and finishing around 6 p.m. in the afternoon.

Where and what are we eating?

We will have lunch in a picnic area located at the top of the mountains and perfectly equipped for all kinds of meals. In fact, this place is widely used by the “Canariones” for excursions and weekend family meals. In addition, this place has toilets, which the Cabildo de Gran Canaria maintains in perfect condition on a daily basis.

The food is home-cooked, made with fresh, seasonal produce, most of it bought from small local shops, so the quality is unbeatable.

We will contact you in order to know your preferences before the trip and to choose the food and drinks based on the information you have provided. In any case, as far as drinks are concerned, we would appreciate it if you could be as specific as possible (e.g. if you choose soft drinks, please specify the type).

Please note that we are in a protected natural area, therefore, we ask you to deposit all your waste in the waste bins provided.

If we don’t make commercial stops, does that mean I can’t buy a souvenir?

Of course not, when it comes to getting around the different stops we make during our private visit to Gran Canaria, we will find a wide variety of shops of all kinds. Most of them with local gastronomic and handicraft products, so you can buy any souvenir you wish.

On our private tours, we want to encourage local trade and traditional small businesses. All the extra expenses you incur go directly to them, we do not receive commissions of any kind.

Is everything included in this tour?

Included in the price: food, drinks, transport, pick-up, drop-off and all insurances.

As we have already mentioned in the previous question, the only extra cost would be if you decide to buy any kind of product in the local shops and stalls that you will find along the guided tour. But that is entirely up to you.

If you are a coffee lover, we can also stop at a local coffee shop after lunch if you ask us to do so and make your siesta time easier. That expense is also on you.

What clothes and shoes should I wear for the excursion?

  • To carry out the tour we recommend:
  • Comfortable shoes (trainers would be a good choice).
  • Warm clothes (near the coast you can be in a short-sleeved T-shirt, but on the summit it’s cold even in summer, sometimes it rains!)
  • Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen (logical, right?)
  • Mobile phones and all kinds of electronic devices you want with 100% charge (although in the vehicle we have a USB input for charging electronic devices in the passenger compartment).

What are the weather conditions?

The trade winds, the Gulf Stream and the orography of Gran Canaria have blessed this island with a wonderfully mild climate all year round. At any time of the year, you can enjoy different microclimates, depending on where you are: the coast, the midlands or the mountains. Near the coast, you can wear a short-sleeved T-shirt. But at the summit it is often cold, even in summer, and sometimes it rains! That’s why we recommend being prepared for all kinds of weather situations.

In any case, Sky Rebels reserves the right to modify the tour in case of adverse weather conditions.

What is the cancellation policy?

  • The company reserves the right to cancel the activity for technical or meteorological reasons. In this case the amount paid will be refunded.
  • The company reserves the right to cancel the activity in case the required minimum number of passengers is not reached. In this case, the amount paid will be refund.
  • If the client cancels the activity with more than 48 hours notice, the amount paid will be refunded, except for a 10% handling fee per passenger.
  • If the client cancels the activity with less than 48 hours notice, no refund will be made.
  • In any of the following cases, Sky Rebels will not refund the client:
    • The client is intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
    • The activity is cancelled due to the client’s deliberate delay or failure to attend the activity.
