Risco Caido and the Sacred Mountains in Gran Canaria: do you want to learn more?

From 07/07/2019, Risco Caido and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria cultural landscape belongs to UNESCO World Heritage. We want to show you this amazing area so you will understand the history and culture from the ancient Canarians.

One of the best hidden secrets in the island: the Sacred Mountains and the cultural landscape; are located at the North West side, an almost inaccessible area that has remained untouched for centuries. This is the area where you can really understand what the traditional lifestyle of the first inhabitants of Gran Canaria has been, and how we still preserve part of this enormous cultural and natural wealth. Likewise, this entire area has been considered a Biosphere Reserve since 2005.

You will spend an unforgettable day in which you will learn in detail the impressive history of the first settlers of Gran Canaria; discover some amazing archaeological sites; and see in situ their way of life. You will taste the most typical local products; including gofio, an aboriginal food that still survives in our gastronomic culture.

Unesco Gran Canaria: The route

Volcanic landscapes

We will pick you up at your hotel entrance (located in Maspalomas or Mogan) from 8.45 to 9.15 -we will let you know the exact pickup time the day before- with “Lupita”: our new climatized minivan ready for a maximum of 6 passengers.

Heading to Mogan Village, we are going to take an amazing road to the center of the island and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria cultural landscape.

Along the route, we will stop at different viewpoints, so we can contemplate the landscape, learn about nature in Gran Canaria. We will stop at one of the biggest lakes on the island – the Presa de las Niñas – where you will learn some surprising legends about the area.

Artenara

Artenara, a small town built in caves (more than 600 cave houses!) in which you can still find cave dwellings. Here we will discover the visitor centre of the Risco Caido, with the real reproduction of this incredible cave and the impressive light effect inside. In addition, we will see different cave locations that make this city unique in Gran Canaria.

After leaving Artenara, we will stop for lunch, with homemade Canarian food, in the heart of the Biosphere Reserve of Gran Canaria.

Gran Canaria Mountains

Heading back to the center of the island, we are going to stop in several points to contemplate incredible views of the mountains in Gran Canaria, like Roque Nublo, Roque Bentayga or Tamadaba forest. After this, we will stop in Tunte (San Bartolomé de Tirajana); in this city, we are going to have a coffee break -not included on price- before heading to our last stop:

La fortaleza Gran Canaria

La Fortaleza Gran Canaria; made up of three enormous rocks: the large fortress, the small fortress and the fortress below (or Titana). The ancient Canary Islanders used it as a habitat, burial place, storage place and even a place to worship their gods for more than 1,000 years. It is also the last stronghold of aboriginal resistance against the Spanish conquerors. A magical place “off the beaten track” where you will better understand the bravery and incredible culture and history of the first inhabitants of the island.

Finally, we are going to drive back to the south of Gran Canaria and leave you back at your hotel at about 18.30.

What’s included

  • Transfer from hotels located in Maspalomas and Mogan touristic areas.
  • Lunch
  • Beverages
  • Accident and liability insurances.

We recommend:

  • Sun protection
  • Cameras and mobiles with a full battery
  • There are differences in temperatures up to 15ºC on the different points we are going to visit. A jumper is recommended, just in case. Warm clothes in winter.
  • Comfortable shoes.

Tour I did 5 tours on the island, this was the only with Sky Rebels, but this was my favorite one. Loved that we went to Barranco de las Vacas early, so we had our time to explore before other tourists came. I also liked going to the secret cave a lot. Tourguides were very friendly as well.

Perfekt!

Lupita is the Greatest in the Universe This was an amazing, intimate and educational tour! We were enthusiastically greeted by Juanjo and Ines at our hotel and hopped into the comfortable minivan with a charming couple from London. We were then whisked away to begin what was about 8 hours of fun, but never felt that long. Ines gave wonderful background and history on the island of Gran Canaria while Juanjo expertly navigated the hairpin turns up and down the mountainous terrain. Little did we know that "Lupita" would also be joining us to interject some playful humor. We made so many interesting stops with more facts about the island and the wonderful inhabitants. Along the way, we had snacks and even got to speak with some local folks. The lunch that was served was delicious and prepared with such care and covering every detail. We covered a lot of ground in those 8 hours and saw much of what the island has to offer. I truly believe there is no better tour on the island. We walked away from the tour feeling like family and that far exceeded my expectations. Thank you so much Ines and Juanjo (and Lupita!)! We hope to see you again! - <3 Hadley and Jeff

Really special tour! The tour is highly recommended! On the Saturday there was actually no possibility to do the tour, but Juanjo and Inés converted it so that we could come along! Juanjo and Inés are super friendly, tell you everything about the places you visit and make it a special day. You can tell they do this with a lot of passion!

Lovely day We enjoyed every moment of our trip last Saturday. Every view was stunning and Juan and Inez made it a fun, playfull but interesting day.We would definitely recommend this tour, but wouldn’t with (small) children because of the long day and walk.

Excellent private tour *** The BEST day of our holiday ***I am going to begin this review with my feelings when we pulled up at our hotel at the end of the day. I was disappointed. Disappointed that our wonderful day had come to an end!My husband our three children and I spent the day exploring all the incredible things Gran Canaria has to offer with Ines and Juan. They picked us up at our hotel entrance at 9.00. They were there on time waiting for us. Their car is immaculate and very comfortable and our tour was tailored to our needs. We first drove to the Gran Canaria mountains, stopping in Degollada de la Yegua and Santa Lucia Valley which both have spectacular views. Then we drove on to Tunte (a traditional Canarian village) where we walked around with Ines who taught us about the history of the island - from the architecture and traditional building methods to the ancient religions and beliefs of the first Canarian settlers. We also had a delicious homemade Canarian snack here which we all really enjoyed. Then we drove on to Presa de los Horno. We stopped for lunch at the Biosphere Reserve and Ines and Juan made us a beautiful homemade Canarian meal made with local products. They catered to our specific requirements and produced a luxury lunch for us washed down with an excellent bottle of Rioja and local honey rum! After lunch we went to Pico de las Nieves , the highest point in Gran Canaria and then to Caldera de los Marteles - a volcanic crater - which is very interesting to see up close. We then drove to Agüimes (the village of craftsmen) which was beautiful and not touristy. We had a coffee and ice cream in a traditional bar. Then we then drove to the east coast where we discovered how windy it is there! And finally to the Maspalomas Dunes which look like a mini Sahara desert in Gran Canaria! They drove us back to our hotel and we arrived at about 6:30pm. Every minute of the tour was interesting and fun. Ines and Juan were such excellent guides and entertainers. They kept us all happy and laughing all day which is all the more impressive with 3 children. We covered a lot of ground, saw so many things and learned so much but it wasn’t a tiring day. It was fun, fascinating we were all sad when it was over!We highly highly highly recommend SKY REBELS!

Amazing experience with the most perfect local guides We booked the Unesco tour of one day. What a great experience! Juanjo and Inés are wonderful people, fun, caring and they have such a great knowledge that they want to share with you. You discover the canarian history, culture and important facts. You go to places no other tours or public go. And ofcourse there is Lupita, a fun personal touch for the kids. For lunch we had a homemade picknick (made by Inés with love, excellent chef) with local ingrediënts and fruits, all traditional food. We were so amazed by the tour and this lovely people that we immediately booked another tour, the Barranco de las vacas. Then we visited the Salinas and also a real cave. There we enjoyed a magnificent view and some local food (once again thanks to the chef) during a rest inside the cave. Again an unforgettable experience. If you are looking for the perfect local guides who are passionated in what they do, Juanjo and Inés are just perfect! We had an unforgettable experience!

Great tour, yummy food away from the touristy beaten path. This was our third excursion with Sky Rebels and it took us to some genuinely local places that tourists don't usually get to, and we were blown away.Let me say that I usually try to book things with different tour guides wherever I go so I can get the most out of my stay but from the get go we all loved Juanjo and Ines and decided to stick with them. And I’m so glad we did, they know their stuff and go out of their way to make you feel super welcome and show you unique experiences that most tour places don’t offer. On this tour we visited Ingenio and learned how water was used and what life was like for farmers in the 18th century. Then we were taken to visit an authentic castle built into the rocks by the ancient inhabitants of Gran Canaria. Finally we visited a nice village on the coast where we got to experience the warmth of the people of Gran Canaria away from touristy spots (thank you very much for "la cuchara", mininno!).On all three days we were offered to taste local products which we loved. We will definitely be booking our tours with Sky Rebels again when we are back in Gran Canaria. These guys are awesome, we very highly recommend them!

FAQ about Unesco Gran Canaria tour:

What does our Unesco Gran Canaria tour consist of?

This is a private excursion, maximum 6 passengers, to discover the World heritage sites in the island of Gran Canaria; both the most emblematic places and other hidden but spectacular places for us.

The guided tour will take place in a new vehicle with all kinds of comforts.

How far will we walk?

Throughout the guided tour, we will make stops to get to know different parts of the island of Gran Canaria. Of course, the total amount of walking distance is entirely up to you. On this private excursion in Gran Canaria, we will provide you with walking poles and water in case that you require it. All included in the price.

How far will we travel?

The total distance in our minivan is about 190 km. Starting in the south of Gran Canaria, we will head towards the NW of the island; later SE, and finish in Maspalomas. Our minivan, “Lupita”, has all the comforts, such as individual air conditioning and USB ports for charging electronic devices. Above all, we want your experience with our private excursions in Gran Canaria to be as enjoyable as possible.

How long is this Unesco Gran Canaria tour?

The total duration of the guided tour is approximately 9 hours. Starting at 9 a.m. and finishing around 6 p.m. in the afternoon.

Where and what are we eating?

We will have lunch in a picnic area located at the top of the mountains and perfectly equipped for all kinds of meals. In fact, this place is widely used by the “Canariones” for excursions and weekend family meals. In addition, this place has toilets, which the Cabildo de Gran Canaria maintains in perfect condition on a daily basis.

The food is home-cooked, made with fresh, seasonal produce, most of it bought from small local shops, so the quality is unbeatable.

We will contact you in order to know your preferences before the trip and to choose the food and drinks based on the information you have provided. In any case, as far as drinks are concerned, we would appreciate it if you could be as specific as possible (e.g. if you choose soft drinks, please specify the type).

Please note that we are in a protected natural area, therefore, we ask you to deposit all your waste in the waste bins provided.

If we don’t make commercial stops, does that mean I can’t buy a souvenir?

Of course not, when it comes to getting around the different stops we make during our private visit to Gran Canaria, we will find a wide variety of shops of all kinds. Most of them with local gastronomic and handicraft products, so you can buy any souvenir you wish.

On our private tours, we want to encourage local trade and traditional small businesses. All the extra expenses you incur go directly to them, we do not receive commissions of any kind.

Is everything included in this tour?

Included in the price: food, drinks, transport, pick-up, drop-off and all insurances.

As we have already mentioned in the previous question, the only extra cost would be if you decide to buy any kind of product in the local shops and stalls that you will find along the guided tour. But that is entirely up to you.

If you are a coffee lover, we can also stop at a local coffee shop after lunch if you ask us to do so and make your siesta time easier. That expense is also on you.

What clothes and shoes should I wear for the excursion?

  • To carry out the tour we recommend:
  • Comfortable shoes (trainers would be a good choice).
  • Warm clothes (near the coast you can be in a short-sleeved T-shirt, but on the summit it’s cold even in summer, sometimes it rains!)
  • Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen (logical, right?)
  • Mobile phones and all kinds of electronic devices you want with 100% charge (although in the vehicle we have a USB input for charging electronic devices in the passenger compartment).

What are the weather conditions?

The trade winds, the Gulf Stream and the orography of Gran Canaria have blessed this island with a wonderfully mild climate all year round. At any time of the year, you can enjoy different microclimates, depending on where you are: the coast, the midlands or the mountains. Near the coast, you can wear a short-sleeved T-shirt. But at the summit it is often cold, even in summer, and sometimes it rains! That’s why we recommend being prepared for all kinds of weather situations.

In any case, Sky Rebels reserves the right to modify the tour in case of adverse weather conditions.

What is the cancellation policy?

  • The company reserves the right to cancel the activity for technical or meteorological reasons. In this case the amount paid will be refunded.
  • If the client cancels the activity with more than 48 hours notice, the amount paid will be refunded, except for a 10% handling fee per passenger.
  • If the client cancels the activity with less than 48 hours notice, no refund will be made.
  • In any of the following cases, Sky Rebels will not refund the client:
    • The client is intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
    • The activity is cancelled due to the client’s deliberate delay or failure to attend the activity.
